EARTH SENSORS STD15/STD16

SODERN has manufactured the STD15 and STD16 conical Earth sensors for more than two decades. They measure attitude in GEO (STD15) or LEO (STD16) orbits for three-axis stabilised satellites.

Although the STD15 and STD16 are still produced for some current customers, they are no longer available for sale.

These devices have totalled more than four centuries of in-orbit operation on dozens of satellites. More than 120 are currently flying on board operational satellites.

These Earth sensors operate in the infrared domain. They scan a large field of view and then detect signals at the Earth/Space transitions. An optical encoder provides the four angular Earth/Space and Space/Earth transition values, which are then fed to the onboard computer to facilitate roll and pitch angle calculations through a combination of these four transitions.

Electronic amplifying and processing circuits have been designed to operate without impact of variations in Earth radiation or of sensor environmental conditions. With its electronic processing, the Earth sensor operates even when celestial bodies like the moon or the sun are in the field of view.
