High Resolution Focal Planes

In the scope of the SPOT and HELIOS satellites programmes, SODERN has developed a series of detection units and focal planes, which have evolved along with upgrades in the programme's satellites. This development policy has resulted in equipment with remarkable operating reliability, proven by the fact that these instruments have accumulated the equivalent of more than 50 years of in-flight experience.

SODERN designed and built the Detection Units (DU) at the heart of the observation instruments of SPOT and HELIOS satellites.

The function of this equipment is to convert optical images of the Earth, which are formed by the telescope, into electrical signals which can be recorded on board the satellite, then transmitted to ground control. The detection unit quality is critical, since overall image quality directly depends on it.

This large and successful experience has placed SODERN in a key role for the development of the future French observation programme PLEIADES, for which sub-metric on-ground resolution is required.
