Hydra

Three heads are better than one

Hydra

HYDRA is the new SODERN multiple head star tracker based on APS (CMOS) detector technology. The purpose of this product is to offer a new generation of sensors with improved capabilities, greater flexibility and a high potential of cost-reduction for future AOCS architecture.

SODERN’s approach for this product allows a large simplification of the AOCS, by reducing the number of sensors required for the system and the transfer of almost all star tracker-related FDIR and data processing features into the star tracker.

Hydra

In November 2005, SODERN received, for its HYDRA star sensor, one of the five “Awards for Product Breakthrough” given for 2005 by the US magazine “Aviation Week and Space Technology”.

A complete Engineering and Qualification Model (EQM) has been developed in order to perform the qualification tests that were achieved in Mid of 2010.

The first HYDRA flight set had been delivered as a passenger equipment for GLONASS programme but suffered from a launch failure in December 2010. The next launch with HYDRA on-board is scheduled in 2012.
