Ultra-High Vacuum Caesium Tube

The “Caesium Tube” is where atoms are operated under an ultra-high vacuum (10-10 Torr) in a very clean magnetic environment. The Tube contains optical devices for capture, selection and detection of atoms as well as Ramsey microwave interaction cavity. Laser light is provided by optical fibres coming from the Laser Source. Atoms are trapped in “optical molasses”, cooled below 1 µK and launched with a slow velocity through the Ramsey cavity. The atoms excited by the microwave radiation are detected downstream by fluorescence.

The 1-meter length and 45 kg Tube incorporates 10 collimators for laser injection and flux control, 2 detection modules for fluorescence measurement, 3 electronic subassemblies. Magnetic field control is obtained with 3 shields and 7 coils. Its ultra-high vacuum requires a specific ion pump, getters and graphite.
