PHARAO

PHARAO

SODERN designs and builds two main subsystems of the space caesium atomic clock PHARAO which has been developed by CNES for the ACES ESA experiment and will be installed on the International Space Station.

The high level of performance that PHARAO aims to reach (accuracy of 10-16 and frequency stability between 10-16-10-17/day) is achieved by atom cooling by laser, selection and detection of caesium atoms and interaction in a microwave field tuned close to the reference caesium frequency.

Such technologies improve by one order of magnitude the best worldwide performance presently achieved with on-ground atomic clocks.
