In 2016, Sodern initiated a process improvement plan for its traditional star tracker production line including the Hydra, SED, and Horus. The plan was divided into the following phases with specific objectives.
Phase 1: increase throughput efficiency
Phase 2: eliminate single-point failures with tooling to bolster production resiliency
During the first phase, Sodern modified its production line to reduce the distance travelled by the product parts from 3km to 400m. The second phase started in 2018 and its focus is the elimination of all single-point failures associated with tooling, which led to the doubling of several state-of-the-art test benches. A potential 2nd production line is being considered to further improve production if perspectives show that more standard product and management practices can be implemented on a wider part of our portfolio.
This process improvement plan also included optimizing the working conditions of our teams. All team members were consulted and their suggestions taken into account to create the best possible working environment.
Several suppliers, partners and consultants have worked closely with Sodern to carry out this ambitious plan, and their dedication has been essential to carry out all operations on time despite the covid-19.
Sodern expects to complete Phase 2 by the end of 2021 and is greatly appreciative of its team members for their hard work and commitment.
